Walkway Lecture Series with Thomas Ilich, P.E. – Courage to Dream Big
June 16 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Come join us for a fun and informative talk with structural engineer and filmmaker Tom Ilich. Tom will present his documentary film on “Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge – Past, Present & Future” followed by a discussion on the dreaming, planning and ingenuity it took to build the worlds longest elevated railroad bridge in the 1880’s.The courage to dream big was needed then as it was to create the Walkway Over the Hudson!
The film includes interviews with key players in transforming the abandoned railroad bridge into the scenic Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park that has become a world class tourist destination. Mr. Ilich’s lecture will provide an overview of the technical challenges of any major river crossing, design types and structural principles. He will also speak to the political challenges involved in building the bridge in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
