Walkway Over the Hudson Final Design Report Completed

POUGHKEEPSIE--With the release of its comprehensive final design report, Walkway Over the Hudson's effort to transform the historic Poughkeepsie Highland Railroad Bridge into an elevated pedestrian park met an important benchmark last week, setting the stage for the construction phase which is scheduled to begin this summer.

Group wants 'legacy' for bridge

The group working to re-open the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge is lobbying to make it a showcase for New York's 400th anniversary celebration of Henry Hudson's voyage along the river that bears his name. Walkway Over the Hudson leaders want to receive special designation as the 2009 celebration's "legacy project.''

Rusty Bridge, Great Views and Soon, a Walkway?

Some see the long-closed Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge as a 6,767-foot-long rusting relic. Others envision a gleaming pedestrian walkway, offering spectacular views of the Hudson Valley. It is that vision that inspires members of Walkway Over the Hudson, a nonprofit group dedicated to building the walkway and reopening the bridge so that strollers and cyclists can experience firsthand what has captivated railroad enthusiasts and history buffs, not to mention politicians and writers, for decades.

Bridge May Be Old, But It's Not Feeble

Divers are inspecting massive piers beneath the Hudson River that support the long-closed Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge. What has been found so far appears to be good news for the effort to reopen the span as a pedestrian walkway. "We've been looking at the structural integrity of the underwater piers," said Fred Schaeffer, head of Walkway Over the Hudson, which is working to make the bridge accessible to the public. "The bridge is in really great shape. ... There's no reason in the world this bridge can't be renovated into a pedestrian walkway."
