Walkway Connections: Oh, Freedom! Quilt Exhibit

June 22 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The Mid-Hudson Antislavery History Project (MHAHP) and the Oh, Freedom! Quilting Project present a short slide show of the history of slavery and antislavery in Dutchess County. On display are commemorative history quilts that were created by local quilt circles and invited quilt artists. There is also a simple make and take project available for community participation.

The quilts will be on display from 1 – 3:30 p.m. so the public will have the opportunity to learn about the art and the history from those involved with this project. The Walkway Connections presentation begins at 2 p.m.  This event takes place at the East Gate Plaza in Poughkeepsie (61 Parker Avenue). It is free to attend and appropriate for all ages.

The MHAHP researches, interprets, and disseminates this history, engaging in public history and cultural programming to help citizens appreciate its ongoing impact on social justice issues. The project focuses on the history of slavery, the Underground Railroad, and the anti-slavery movement in the mid-Hudson region, making it a valuable resource for understanding this significant aspect of American history.

Oh, Freedom! Quilting Project creates community quilts to commemorate and memorialize the people and places in the Hudson Valley who were important in the historic fight for freedom and emancipation. We learn together about the little-known history of the antislavery movement, the Underground Railroad, and the role of enslaved people in building the economy and culture of the Hudson Valley.
