The Great Connector Series: John Burroughs in the Hudson River Valley
September 11, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Join us on September 11 at 1 p.m. at the Ulster Welcome Center (87 Haviland Road, Highland) for a presentation on “John Burroughs in the Hudson River Valley” by Jeff Walker from Vassar College.
John Burroughs moved to the Hudson Valley in 1872, and after that, whenever he traveled, he compared the place he was visiting to his adopted home. His West Park home at Riverby, and his nearby retreat at Slabsides (built in 1895) were visited by many people: the famous, the rich, the unknown, and folks of modest means. Burroughs treated all equally. To him it was most important to introduce his guests to the wonders of nature that surrounded his region. This talk will explore Burroughs’s relationship to the Hudson Valley and the people he knew there.
