Carl Whitehead of the town of Poughkeepsie is hoping a New Year’s Day stroll with stunning views of the Hudson Valley will give him momentum to exercise in 2018.
He was among 100 people who turned out to Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park in Poughkeepsie on Monday for the First Day Hike.
This annual event is designed to encourage people to exercise and begin the new year with an outdoor activity. Enthusiasm for the event ran high, despite temperatures that established it as the coldest New Year’s Day since 1968.

Walkway's elevator, merchandise and information pavilions, and electric tram have ended operation for the season. Indoor restrooms remain open near each gate throughout the year.
WALKWAY CLOSED: Due to persistent icy conditions, the Walkway is currently closed. Both approaches remain open.
