Bannerman's Island
- 23 miles south of Poughkeepsie/Highland
- www.bannermancastle.org
- What looks like a ruined Scottish castle on Bannerman's Island is actually the remains of a warehouse that stored left-over war weapons and explosives during the first half of the 20th century
- Frank Bannerman, the owner of a once thriving surplus military supply business in New York City, built the turreted armory
- New York State acquired the abandoned island from his company in 1967
- The "castle" has suffered from neglect and fire damage, but remains an intriguing landmark
- The Bannerman Island Castle Trust provides tours of the island; visit bannermancastle.org for more information
- Staatsburgh is the next stop on our journey up the river
