- As part of their campaign to occupy New York, British forces sailed up the Hudson River from New York City to aid the British army stalled at Saratoga
- They attacked Forts Clinton and Montgomery at Bear Mountain on October 6, 1777, and routed the American patriots, who were outnumbered three to one
