Clermont
- 30 miles north of Poughkeepsie/Highland
- County Route 6 (off Route 9G), Germantown, NY 12526, 518-537-4240 www.friendsofclermont.org
- Clermont was established on land acquired through a royal patent in 1686
- It was home to seven generations of the influential Livingston family, including Robert R. Livingston, who helped author the Declaration of Independence, negotiated the Louisiana Purchase and, with Robert Fulton, developed the first commercial steam boat, which docked at Clermont on its maiden voyage
- The estate's house, built by Robert Livingston Jr. between 1730 and 1750, was destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War, but was quickly rebuilt and later enlarged and remodeled
- Clermont remains remarkably unchanged; its main house is filled with Livingston family furnishings and art and its landscaped grounds boast a series of picturesque gardens
- Olana is the next treasure on the tour
