- After leaving Kingston in ruins, the British attacked and burned Clermont, home of the prominent Livingston family and major landowners in the Hudson Valley since the 17th century
- The house was quickly rebuilt and later remodeled in the Colonial Revival style
- Chancellor Robert R. Livingston helped draft the Declaration of Independence and negotiated the Louisiana Purchase. An inventor, he collaborated with Robert Fulton on building the first practical steamboat, which docked at Clermont on its maiden voyage
